Ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (PG) are used to effectively lower the freezing point or raise the boiling point of water and for most applications can be used interchangeably. While there are several minor variations in the properties of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, typically it is the toxicity requirement that dictates which glycol should be used in a particular application.
EG is more toxic than PG. Small amounts can be fatal if ingested by humans or animals. Conversely, PG is not harmful to humans if ingested in moderate amounts and is commonly used in food additives. Therefore, PG solutions are favored when human exposure can occur.
